  2. What have you learnt about journalistic writing?

What have you enjoyed about journalistic writing?

Did you enjoy the school trip to BBC News – Coventry and Warwickshire?

  3. TK

I have learnt how to include statistics (a piece of information expressed as a number) in a news report.

  4. 3 D.S

If someone asked me before what the 5 W’s were, I would know but I wouldn’t know what they were in a news report. I do now!

  5. Sweets

We have enjoyed writing our own news reports because we wrote about topics we were interested in, for example The X Factor, I’m a celebrity and sports.

  6. astoncrazy2410010

During learning about journalistic writing I have learnt the three following effects:

    1) I have learnt how to include the 5 W’s (who what where when why) in my journalistic pieces of work.
    2) I have also found out how to annotate a news report.
    3) Finally I learn that journalistic writing comes in all sorts of writing types such as blogs, magazines , news papers , radio , T.V .

  7. Mrs. Bieber and CrispCJA :)

We have learnt that every time you write a news report the 5 ‘w’s have to be placed in the opening paragraph, if not then they have to be in the main body.
There are 6 questions to ask:
Who: who is the report about.
What: what has happened to the who.
When: when did it happen , for example: 16th June 2016.
Where: where did this event happen.
Why: why did this event happen and why did it occur .
How: how did this event happen.

We really liked the trip to CWR due to the fact that one group got to go on the radio! Also, we got to have a tour around the entire radio station; another thing is we went in the meeting room.

  9. Chocolate Addict N.I

I have learnt to do so many things such as . . .
Statistics = it can be a fact expressed as a number like percentages, fractions and decimals.
Facts and Opinions = Different sides can be an opinion; chocolate is the greatest thing in the whole world is an opinion. Fact, chocolate was invented many years ago.
So that’s just some of the things we’ve learnt!!!!!!!

  10. stranger

We have learnt that the headline has to be short and snappy to catch the readers attention and that the sub heading gives more information about the headline, and that the introduction has to include who, what, when, where and why. We have also learnt to include statistics that can be % or fractions. We have also learnt how to include fact quotes, opinion quotes and both fact and opinion facts in a quote.

  11. E.CApinnapple 10

I really enjoyed the trip to CWR (BBC Radio Coventry and Warwickshire) we played the sentence game.

  12. chocolate

Significantly, year 6 got the opportunity to visit BBC Coventry and Warwickshire radio station; fortunately we went on live radio! EVERYBODY REALLY LOVED IT! Thank you Coventry and Warwickshire for a lovely day!

  13. CrispCJA :)

I learnt that in a report what ever the report is about you always need to include statistics to give the reader the extra data.
    For example:
Last year 7 million people watched Matt Baker do the Rickshaw Challenge 2011
Out of 100 people 98% enjoyed watching it.

Our teacher ( Mr Johnston ) is so brilliant at teaching because he makes all of the lessons fun but we learn so much at the same time!!!!

  16. A.Gcarrot10 & Soppy

In journalistic writing we ( A.Gcarrot10 & Soppy) have enjoyed writing our descriptive news report. Also we have learned how to put statistics into our work. For example: fractions and percentages.

We think the best bit of the journalistic writing topic has to be the BBC Coventry and Warwickshire news trip where we had a tour of the studios and some of us had the chance to go on the radio.

  18. jimbob1

I have benefited massively from this experience. To start with, never in a million years would I have learnt all the knowledge without: learning the basics and structure of a news report, creating step by step in my head the kind of report people want to read and finally knuckling down and actually writing one. After this unit of work was finished I was a little bit disappointed. I’ve learnt so much I don’t want to stop. Quotes, statistics, facts, opinions; all of them things with me for life.

Wow, I have never enjoyed learning as much as this in my whole time in primary school. I will miss the topic. You can talk a lot about how much you enjoyed a unit but if you are taught the way we were taught, nothing will reach above that bar.

The trip to CWR was brilliant. It really influenced me in becoming a journalist. Everything was amazing. It all seemed so fun. The people working there were extremely nice to us. I felt like a V.I.P in the building. I will treasure the experience for ever. Going there again would be fantastic!

    • M I James

What an illuminating piece of writing by a Year 6 boy. Reading this makes me wish I had taken up journalism when I was young. Well done Jimbob. Best wishes.

      • jimbob1

If you want I could lend you some information about the topic. I’m sure if everyone did then you would learn loads from it.

  19. ECO AND W.MC

Wednesday was great as we visited Coventry & Warwickshire radio station. When we arrived we got split into two groups. The two groups took it in turns to have a tour round the station. One group (which was ours) was toured first, we were recorded on the radio and was also on our head teachers blog with two audio boo’s because of this we were very excited and over the moon.

I have enjoyed building up all of the things we’ve learned and then putting them all in the news reports we wrote.

  22. K cat 88

Visiting CWR was great because we got some hands on experience of what radio and news broadcasts are all about

  23. Maxumus of destruction

I have learnt to use the 5W’s in the introduction of the news report. And to use quotes to make it more chatty and interesting. I enjoyed it because its fun to write headlines in the news report. I really enjoyed the trip to the radio station and finding out what they were doing behind the scenes.

  24. Popcorn

We have learnt lots of interesting features during our topic of journalistic writing. Including :

The BEST trip EVER is when we went to CWR (BBC Coventry and Warwickshire);thank you soooooooo much Siobhan.

  26. Mrs. Bieber

Last Wednesday year 6 went to CWR (Coventry and Warwickshire Radio) to have a tour around their studios.
Firstly we got split into two groups. Group one went with Mr. Watson, the second group went with Mr. Johnston and Mrs. Barrett.
The first group went first to have a tour around so the second group went into the meeting room and played on the iPods before sharing stories with each other. It was fun.
Then the second group had their tour ; the other group went into the meeting room.

  27. stranger

We loved the trip to BBC Coventry and Warwickshire because we had the chance to go on the radio and lucky enough to have a complete tour of the studios.

  28. ECO AND W.MC

In our journalistic writing course we have learnt to include

    1) 5W’S (who, what, where, when ,why)

    3) OPINIONS
    4) STATISTICS
    5) QUOTES

  29. Mrs. Bieber and CrispCJA:)

Before we did this lesson on Journalistic Writing, I didn’t know how to write a news report. Now I want to be a journalist for fashion magazines when I’m older and crispCJA 🙂 wants to be a camera man. 🙂

I have really enjoyed journalistic writing .I have learnt about statistics and quotes.

  31. Wow, Year 6! What a lot you have learned. Your blog is brilliant. We loved the Audio Boo and all the photographs of your excellent work. What we loved most of all though were your fabulous comments – they show just how much you have learned through this topic. The experience of going to BBC Coventry and Warwickshire has clearly had a massive impact on you all, as you are definitely writing like journalists. Well done alll of you and well done Mr J.

As we know, Journalistic writing is a skill that we can apply to later life. Everybody in our class loves learning about it and its a thing that people in primary school should all do as it is fun, factual and COOL!! @_@

  37. cheese on toast

i have really enjoyed learning about journalistic writing as it has provided me with a skill for life and i have learnt an all manner of new things about writing a news report. :p : ) 😀

  38. I liked learning about journalistic writing because you can then follow on to other text types including:
    Magazine
    Newspaper
    Comic strip
    Letter
    Story
    Advertisement page
    Leaflet
    Poster.
From this you can practically do anything to do with text types.
Know that I know the basics I can write a news report without anybody to help me. As long as you include the main features like:
    Headline
    Sub heading
    Introduction
    First paragraph.
    I hope this has helped!!!
    From RGW
